UK Financial Investments Limited

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Readers of this site will be hearing a lot more about this new “arm’s length, commercial” company “wholly owned by the government” (on behalf of you and me, the taxpayers, who are paying for it). It has been set up to own our shares in RBS, LLoyds/TSB/HBOS, Northern Rock and Bradford and Bingley. It will own assets worth well in excess of the annual National Income of the country. It will be responsible for a major share of all bank loans and deposits in the UK, and will have large operation

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Commends US and UK Authorities for Following Its Lead

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

You simply cannot make this up. I found a section of this priceless commentary from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe via Marc Faber’s latest newsletter (hat tip reader Dean), and had to verify it. The original provides an even richer mine of material. From the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (boldface theirs): As Monetary Authorities, we have been humbled and have taken heart in the realization that some leading Central Banks, including those in the USA and the UK, are now not just talking of, but also

Gates of Vienna News Feed 11/29/2008

Besides the latest from Mumbai, the most interesting news tonight concerns the BNP. The Labour government’s policy of overt persecution towards the BNP and other dissenters has backfired, and the BNP is gaining in strength. There are a couple of reports below about yesterday’s BNP demonstration in Liverpool, which was mounted as a response to the arrest of three party members for handing out leaflets. Thanks to C. Krauthammer Annoys My Inner Pedant

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

by hilzoy I don’t normally read Charles Krauthammer, but Heather Hurlburt at Democracy Arsenal does, and she flagged this startling paragraph: “In the old days — from the Venetian Republic to, oh, the Bear Stearns rescue — if you wanted to get rich, you did it the Warren Buffett way: You learned to read balance sheets. Today you learn to read political tea leaves. If you want to make money on Wall Street (or keep from losing your shirt), you do it not by anticipating Intel’s third-quarter

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

After seeing your response to the Weekend With Malto in KC, you’ll surely enjoy this board release rager the KC crew had. Our intern ASmith brings us the goods: Sean Malto has had a few pro model boards come out in the last few months, but nothing like the one that was released this past Friday night. Malto’s new Girl board is based off a favorite drink of the Kansas City Crew, Big Bear. The unveiling celebration of the best looking board on the market was met by a huge Kansas City party. Thre

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

COVINGTON, LA. This action comes immediately after Goldman Sachs announced that it had won the same kind of charter in an “effort to change its investment banking model and gather deposits.” Two months earlier,
